Lemon Aval / Lemon Poha has become my recent fav esp when the tummy kicks in for the 5PM teatime snack. It is very quick to put together and you need not wait too long, flavourful and yummy upma ready in minutes....what else do you want? I always love lemon flavour for its tanginess like lemon ricelemon sevai etc and now this has been added to the list too.I have already posted a simple aval upma yrs ago, this is a variation of the usual aval upma.

You can use any variety of poha as you wish but I prefer the thick variety as it is less sticky, though tastewise not much of difference. I love the thin variety for aval urundai and aval payasam. When I was puzzled of what to pack last week, this lemon poha came to my rescue and yes I agree posting here was in my mind too :)

Lemon Aval Recipe - Ingredients

Preparation Time : 10 mins | Cooking Time : 10 mins | Serves : 2

Aval(Poha) - 1 cup (I used thick poha variety )
Lemon juice - from 1 small lemon
Salt - to taste

To temper:

Oil - 2 tsp
Mustard - 1 tsp
Channa Dal - 1 tsp
Urad dal - 1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
Hing - a generous pinch
Green chillies - 1 chopped finely
Curry leaves - few


  1. Squeeze juice from a small lemon, set aside.Add water to poha just till immersing level,leave it soaked for 3-5mins(if its thick variety).Add required salt.

  2. Meanwhile soak channa dal for 10mins. Heat oil in a pan - add the items under 'to temper' and saute till golden brown and the dals turn crisp.

  3. Then add soaked poha, give a stir until the seasoning is mixed evenly.Check for salt and adjust accordingly. Switch off and add the lemon juice.

Serve hot/warm!
